History of Art will introduce you to art from different periods and world cultures. You will learn how, why, and for whom, works of art were made. Additionally, you will gain a more broad understanding of the place of artworks within culture.

This programme will introduce you to art and architecture from different periods and world cultures. You will take courses learning about art from the fall of the Roman Empire to the present day, as well as courses on architectural history. Our degree takes advantage of the University of Edinburgh's long-standing tradition of studying Asian literary and visual culture, and our wider expertise in art from different periods and places. On this programme, you will also learn to read, write and speak modern standard Chinese to an advanced level.

The history of art and English literature complement each other well, benefiting from shared methodologies. Many ideas and movements are shared across visual arts and literature. In addition to core subjects, you will choose option courses from a variety of disciplines, then specialise as you progress through your honours years.

You will study history of art and history of music in equal depth with this joint honours programme. In pre-honours years you will take history courses and a variety of option courses. In honours years you will specialise, and ultimately write a dissertation on a topic of your choosing.

The history of art and Scottish literature complement each other well. Both subjects benefit from shared methodologies and historical contexts, and many ideas and movements are shared across the visual arts and literature. At the end of the course, you will conduct your own research for a dissertation.

Study Italian at Edinburgh and learn the language in the context of Italian culture, including some of the most famous and influential works of literature, art and cinema.

Combine the study of Italian language and culture with Classics, and explore historic civilisations that have shaped Western society today. Spend a year abroad in Italy, and take a Latin, Ancient Greek or non-languages Classics pathway.
