Already have a degree or are studying towards one

We usually give priority to people applying for their first degree. For graduate entry degree programmes, different restrictions may apply.

You already have a degree

For the vast majority of our degree programmes, if you already have an undergraduate degree, we will consider your application less competitive.

We prioritise applicants who have not had the opportunity to study at undergraduate level. Due to levels of competition for places, this means that we may be unable to make offers to applicants who have experience studying at degree level.

Having a degree will not put you at a disadvantage when applying for MBChB Medicine, BVM&S Veterinary Medicine or any programme that is specifically for graduate applicants.

You are currently studying towards a different degree

If you are already studying another degree and you want to transfer, we may be able to consider your application if you meet our transfer criteria.

However, as we receive many applications from well-qualified applicants each year, the number of places available to transfer students is extremely limited.

Applicants to MBChB Medicine

If you are already studying a degree and you want to apply to MBChB Medicine, you must not have just started or be midway through your degree in the academic year in which you apply.

We expect people who undertake degree programmes to complete them, and therefore, we cannot consider applications from people who are not in the final year of their degree.

We do not accept any transfers into Medicine or candidates who have already studied or been enrolled on another medicine programme elsewhere, other than:

  • from institutions where prior agreement exists, or
  • due to extreme exceptional circumstances, considered on a case-by-case basis
