Qualifications do not meet our entry requirements

If you have been told that you were unqualified for entry, it may be that your application was rejected for one or more of the following reasons.

You do not have the required grades

Each degree programme has its own grade requirements (for example, ‘AABB at Higher’ or ‘AAB at A level’). To be considered for a place, you will need to meet or exceed these grade requirements.

We cannot consider your application further if you have not met these grade requirements, or if you are not predicted to meet them in your remaining exams and coursework.

You have not taken required subjects or have not achieved the right grades in required subjects

Many of our degree programmes have required subjects as part of their entry requirements. Some also specify grades for these subjects (for example, ‘Chemistry at B’).

If you do not have these required subjects, or if you do not achieve the required grades for these subjects, your application will be unsuccessful.

You did not take approved subjects

We do not accept all subjects as entry qualifications. If you apply with a subject not on the approved list, we cannot take your application further.

You did not meet our English language requirements

All applicants to the University must prove that they meet our English language requirements. This is the case even if you are a UK national.

You must be able to prove your English language ability through your qualifications when you apply. If you cannot, your application will be unsuccessful.

Your qualification type is not accepted by the University of Edinburgh

We accept a wide range of different qualifications from around the world, but unfortunately we cannot accept all of them.

Our entry requirements pages list the types of qualifications that we accept:
