About the degree programme

Taking the science of sound as your focus, you’ll work in a cross-disciplinary environment. You will use theoretical and experimental work to explore the musical, technical and multimedia applications of acoustics and audio technology.

The emphasis of this programme is on science and technology in the context of musical and multimedia applications.

The programme aims to:

  • provide a broadly based, scientifically-oriented foundation in the area of acoustics, audio, and music technology
  • develop your skills in research, programming, and analytical problem-solving
  • give you a strong understanding of music/audio technology
  • create a multidisciplinary learning environment that will prepare you for a future career

Thinking about studying MSc Acoustics and Music Technology at Edinburgh College of Art? Discover the programme, how you'll be taught, and hear from our students about their study experiences with us.

Programme benefits

  • Enhanced career opportunities and possibility for further doctoral study through a rigorous scientific training in acoustics and audio signal processing
  • Availability of creative music technology coursework
  • Availability of optional modules from across the university, including from the School of Informatics, the School of Mathematics and the School of Physics and Astronomy
  • Access to a wealth of technical facilities, including studios and VR/multichannel spaces
  • The networking possibilities of joining the large and supportive community of MSc Acoustics and Music Technology students from the past 19 years

The AMT programme has been incredibly enriching, particularly the Acoustic Modelling and Simulation course, where I gained hands-on experience with MATLAB and room acoustics - skills that have been invaluable for my final project on double-slope reverb optimisation. Exploring how to enhance speech intelligibility in reverberant spaces like churches has been fascinating, and I’m grateful for the programme’s focus on merging theoretical acoustics with practical coding.

However, this is not a compulsory requirement, and it is possible to complete the degree without incurring such additional costs.

Depending on your research interests, you may optionally choose to incur costs associated with realising aspects of your final project. Such costs are not compulsory, would depend on the nature of your project, and are unlikely to exceed £100 in value.
