By asking questions, we initiate. From this foundation, we take an active stance, speculating and expanding not merely on what Graphic Design is capable of as a means of influencing, uniting, and conversing, but also on the identity of Graphic Designers in a volatile world and a reality that is constantly being reshaped by new technologies. What kind of designer does the world now urgently need? What must they envision, and what must they take responsibility for?We hold the demands of the real world alongside the value of craft and experimentation. We encourage a practice that moves fluidly between rigour and curiosity: technical and imaginative by turns, clarifying and refining as it probes, plays and evolves its way towards something new, yet made to matter to its audiences.Your study will be guided by academic staff who are themselves working designers and creatives, and connected to a network of industry practitioners who open doors to extensive opportunities and knowledge. You will also find yourself in a studio environment where collaborative study and creation happen, cultivating fresh ideas, building momentum, and forming meaningful partnerships and friendships.Through inquisitive making and progressive resolution, working both independently and as a collective, you will arrive at a clearer sense of purpose and establish a voice of your own as a designer. You will gain new insight and build connections that support your future career, and leave with the capacity to adapt, and to shape what comes next. This programme is for those with a foundation in Graphic Design who want to deepen and expand their practice. It also welcomes practising designers and creatives from adjacent subjects who want to redefine their direction, sharpen their vision, or step towards a greater sense of mission. Whichever route you take, core skills in visual communication and design are essential. We help you engage with the subject of Graphic Design and support you to access and develop a variety of research techniques, offering a dynamic and original alternative to conventional library or internet research: a way to form innovative ideas, grow new knowledge, develop new skills, shape your personal process and lead to creation and design that will spark new definition, influence and collaboration. The course will also provide opportunities to:establish connectiveness with students and stafffamiliarise students with the programme structureset educational and learning expectationsprovide general examination and feedback informationprovide grading and mandatory assessment procedures During projects, you will be encouraged to establish self-led design groups: places where students take part in peer-to-peer feedback sessions and cultivate an active studio culture and collaborative practice. Our challenge is for students:to think differentlyto alter preconceived notionsto discover and construct new and unfamiliar ways of seeingto develop a visual awarenessto observe, listen and understandto problem solve, overcome challenges when developing solutionsto aspire to make a difference; socially, politically and environmentallyTypical graphic design course projects may include:visual identitiesposter designpackagingbranding merchandisingtypographyeditorial designmotion graphicsaudio and soundscapesvisual design systems and structuregraphic design theory, history and cultureResearch Narratives, 20 credits (Semester 2)The course introduces a making and designing process that is driven through curiosity-based observance, dynamic research, inquisitive making and progressive resolution. It will equip you with the critical skills to innovate and develop your own originality in researching, thinking and designing.Independent Project, 60 credits (Summer)Serving as the dissertation, the Independent Project provides you with an opportunity to develop a body of work that brings together the synthesis of communication, enquiry, vision and contribution, from a Graphic Design perspective. You are challenged to originate new approaches to information gathering, analysis and reflection, and to develop new methods of making, designing and resolving, which then initiate new ways of thinking, seeing and understanding in yourself, the subject of Graphic Design and the world around us.You will resolve a body of work for presentation and showcase at the MA submission in August.
