The Higher grades you need to be considered for an offer

These are the grades most applicants needed to receive an offer in recent years:

  • AABB (achievement by end of S5 preferred)
  • BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.

What do these grades mean?

Required subjects

The grades you use to meet our entry requirements must include the following at Higher:

  • Biology at B
  • Chemistry at B

Higher Mathematics or Physics and Advanced Higher Biology and Chemistry are recommended.

Your other Highers can be in any other subject, except the few subjects we do not accept.

You must also have the following at National 5:

Second year entry requirements

There are a limited number of places for second year entry each year. Achieving the required grades does not guarantee an offer for direct entry into second year. You will not be considered for second year entry where you:

  • are applying with resit qualifications
  • have taken your final examinations over more than one academic year
  • have a gap in study since completing your eligible high school qualifications

To be considered for direct entry to Year 2, you will need to meet all the requirements listed.

Who is eligible for our minimum entry requirements?

These entry requirements are for applicants who are permanent residents in the UK and eligible to be considered for a widening access Plus Flag offer.

  • ABBB by end of S6
  • BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.

You must prove that you can read, write, listen and speak in the English language at a level that will allow you to succeed in your studies.

This is the case for all applicants, including UK nationals.

You can meet our English language requirements with qualifications from school or an English language test.

School qualifications we accept

We accept any of the following, at the specified grade or higher:

  • SQA National 5 English at C
  • GCSE English at C or 4
  • Level 2 Certificate English at C
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Standard Level English at 5 (English ab initio is not accepted for entry)

English language tests we accept

If you don’t have school qualifications that meet our requirements, we accept any of the following English language tests, at the specified grade or higher: 

  • IELTS Academic: total 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component. We do not accept IELTS One Skill Retake to meet our English language requirements.
  • TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition): total 92 with at least 23 in each component. We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Score to meet our English language requirements.
  • C1 Advanced (CAE) / C2 Proficiency (CPE): total 176 with at least 169 in each component.
  • Trinity ISE: ISE II with distinctions in all four components.
  • Oxford ELLT: total 7 with at least 6 in each component.
  • Oxford Test of English Advanced: total 145 with at least 135 in each component.

How old your English language qualifications can be

Qualifications no more than two years old

Qualifications from the following English language tests must be no more than two years old from the start date of this programme, regardless of your nationality:

  • Trinity ISE

Qualifications no more than three and a half years old

All other types of English language qualification must be no more than three and a half years old from the start date of this programme.

If you are a national of a majority English-speaking country or region, there is no time limit on how old these other types of English language qualifications can be.

What do these grades mean?

Required subjects

The grades you use to meet our entry requirements must include the following at HL:

  • Biology and Chemistry, one at 5 and one at 6

Mathematics or Physics is recommended.

Your other HL can be in any other subject.

Standard Levels (SLs) required

You must also have the following at SL:

  • English at 5
  • Mathematics: Analysis and approaches or Mathematics: Applications and interpretation at 5

If Mathematics and English Language do not form part of your IB diploma, we will also accept GCSE Mathematics, or equivalent, at B/6 and GCSE English Language or equivalent at C/4.

Second year entry requirements

There are a limited number of places for second year entry each year. Achieving the required grades does not guarantee an offer for direct entry into second year. You will not be considered for second year entry where you:

Mature applicants (including adult returners)

You are generally considered to be a mature applicant if you will be aged 21, or over, at the start of your degree programme.

You will need to meet the standard entry requirements unless you are also an adult returner.

What is an adult returner?

We will consider you to be an adult returner if:

  • you have had a break of at least 3 years in your formal education, and

  • you do not have an undergraduate degree, and

  • you have completed relevant accredited study within the past 3 years (for example, a SWAP programme, HNC/HND, or an access to HE diploma)
